Actually it’s not.
Like many people in Los Angeles and surrounding region, the power black out (due to some guy cutting the wrong line), was a bit of an inconvenience.
Who knew it’ll take down this site too? Appearantly Dreamhost’s data center is in the LA area. I’m not sure if they ever disclose the location. But with something like this, I guess it’s a bit obvious. Plus they mentioned it on their blog. So besides some of my sites going down, the SQL server for StopBuyingCrap also went down – along with the email servers.
It’s kind of weird. Not too long ago, a power outage means no TV to watch for a bit. Now, a power outage means websites taken down, email server takes a nap, and potential money goes bye-bye.
Funky.

Most of us that blogs, knows about and uses Technorati.
I actually didn’t know about it until a few months ago. I was looking at my site statistics, and found out that a few people visited via searches done on Technorati. After visiting the site, I immediately bookmarked it.
Anyhow today’s Wall Street Journal had an article on the blog search engine. You can read the article at WSJ.com’s free content page before they remove it. Pretty interesting, IMO.
These thing still makes me giggle sometimes. Just a few years ago, the term “blog” didn’t even existed yet, and now you hear about it everywhere – on TV, from friends, and of course online.
I wonder whats in store for the upcoming years?

Today’s Wall Street Journal had an article on how Katrina have prompted a record pace of giving. It seemed that the rapid influx of donations have caused many organizations to better show their accountability in the use of raised funds. The America Red Cross, after it’s prevoius issue with the 9/11 Liberty Fund has now provided much more detailed information on their website pertaining to the services that they provide the disaster victims.
If you’re considering about giving, it’s important to take a look at how some of these organizations use your money. The WSJ article also listed some resources where you can find more informations and tips when you decide to give.
I’ve browse through the sites the WSJ article listed, and found the relevant pages. Here’s the list:
- Charity Navigator – Provides a list of charities that are assisting in the relief effort, and a efficiency review on each of them.
- American Institute of Philanthropy – Provides list of charities that are in the relief effort and provide with a grading of each charities.
- IRS.gov – Internal Revenue Service’s information on charitable giving and tax relief issues for diaster victims.
- Wise.org – Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. Provides review and rating for charities involving in the relief operation.
Like many of us, I have been following the relief efforts. I only hope that the number of fatalities aren’t as high as we all fear…
