What If… Your Net Worth Is Public?
Posted by Cap in Even More Ramblings on February 20, 2007 |
You’re waiting in line at the bus stop and suddenly you hear chattering behind you. In fact, a giggle escaped from one of the female standing behind you. Without turning around, you knew right away what they’re discussing about.
The floating green numbers above your head. A dollar sign follow by digits. Your net worth.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t go away. You tried in vain to cover it with numerous things. A top hat. An umbrella. Your kid on a piggy back ride. The numbers just floats higher. You tried whacking at it with a stick or your hand but the numbers will merely fissile out momentarily, only to reappear later.
And so you stood there, painfully aware that your numbers is the lowest ones among those waiting in line. You curse the day that Supreme Overlord Xenu made it mandatory for net worth to be displayed publicly and wish that you were back in 2007, where your only problems were the fact that everyone and their mom wanted to run for the Presidency of the United State of America…
…
Imagine for a moment that your net worth is public.
Worse, your entire financial history is available to a stranger — if they’re curious enough.
Things will certainly look different when you see your neighbor pulls up on his drive way, getting out of his brand new luxury car with a big red negative net worth floating above his head. You may also be surprise to find out that the humble looking neighbor down the street is a multi-millionaire, who has somehow saved his way to wealth.
A simple trip to the grocery store or shopping mall may also drastically change. Perhaps people would be more self conscious on what they buy. Nice new designer jeans while you’re showing a negative net worth? Not so hot. A small tip when the floating numbers says you can afford a lot more? Again, not very fun.
Let’s not forget the safety issues too — especially when you’re stuck on the bad side of the town with a big dollar sign floating above your head. (On the other hand, a negative net worth may be robbery deterrent).
Family and friends may treat you diffrently. Co-workers will chit chat (office drama to the max). You will hear more lines such as these: “Eyes down here please, those numbers don’t determine me as a person!” It seems there will be more negative implications than positive ones.
What if your net worth is public? What would you do? How will you and the rest of us act?

Interesting…something to think about.

This post would make a great commercial for a bank or brokerage. Nice!

Awww Cap! Were those mean girls giggling at you for not having a BMW? Is that you in the white shirt?
Very interesting. I suppose keeping it real is why I keep a graph up on my blog. (Yet notice that I haven’t moved my Debt-O-Meter in a long time.)

I’d probably say..Uh, it’s the the SIZE of the net worth that matters, it’s what you can do with it…
;-)

ookay weirdos. commercials, mistaken identity and questionable innuendo aside…
I forgot to throw in my 2cent in the post. Personally I wouldn’t want my net worth to be made public. When I was writing this I couldn’t think of one positive outcome from it.
I mean most close friends and close family members pretty much knows where I stand financially, so in a way they can be the safety net or second opinion on important purchases—which made me wonder what would happen if strangers knows your net worth too.
It’s one thing for (some) personal finance bloggers to give a glimpse of their net worth under anonymity, it’s quite another to walk around with a billboard stating your net worth in real life.
Anyway, something to think about :P

I thought that’s what luxury cars and brand name clothes were for – you mean that doesn’t correlate with net worth?
Maybe I just need to buy a bigger grill…

Or bigger tv, car, yatch, and house. Remember, bigger = wealthier. That’s why I’m contemplating 20″ inch rims on my compact car again…
btw, if my net worth is public, I won’t leave the house without my balaclava ;)

What if I have no net worth? Am I supposed to feel terrible, unAmerican or can I

How ’bout that person with the shiny BMW and tailored suit is worth…millions and millions? Don’t judge a book by its cover… goes both ways. ;) A book with an expensive embossed cover can just as easily be a work of great literature and a ratty paperback doesn’t necessarily mean the book’s worth the paper it’s printed on. The only way to find out? Read the book.

Interesting thought. This would have the potential for abuses and economic discrimination. What about all the poseaurs that want to look rich. How are they ever going to go into a luxury car dealership and get any salesmen to rip them off. Then again, one’s net worth wouldn’t stop the vultures from offering double digit financing. In a way, it might be a good thing in that we would stop being hung up on looking and pretending to be rich. Its always the simple looking folks that are rich in net worth and emotional maturity.

Hey, now, I’ve seen that Nickelback video, too. ;)
Oh yeah, you’re topic. Right. I dunno. It would suck, wouldn’t it?
I think it would present a lot of peer pressure. If you have a positive net worth, people would expect you to spend it. If your net worth is negative, you’d get that you-should-know-better stare everytime they see you buying a coffee in Starbucks. It would generate competition among others.
Bleah. Just say no to Xeno!

HOw do I find out my net worth?
February 20th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Tanyetta: Pull out your bank statements, credit card bills, everything and tally it up.
Cap: Dude. How can you wear a balaclava in CA? Isn’t too hot?

Not when you’re rummaging through the dumpster at Wal-Mart at three in the morning.

Wow – that would mean to get the women, you’d have to save money. What would happen to the US economy?!? ;)

Mapgirl, actually it’s been rather cold and chilly here; at least here in So.Cal. (yea, I know, boohoo)
I’d want to ask Cap *how* he would wear it..I don’t think he’d wanna look too suspicious down here….
“All units, we have 10-14…wearing a balala…..balacaca…uh…ski mask……”
————-
Refer to answer above on wearing my ski mask :) Was just trying to be sophisticated when I use the word balaclava, ’s all.

Check out NetworthIQ. You probably won’t see your neighbor, but you might get a better idea about your neighborhood.

I think people would be questioning why, with all my education, I wasn’t worth more. I got that MA I should use it…etc…

If my net worth was to be shown in public I would never leave my house! Great article!

Haha if Networth was floating above my head it would be much easier to get a date in this town. Usually that goes to Mr. spiked up hair, goatee, tough guy tattoos, big truck/SUV driving, drinking beers every weekend, working as a grease monkey getting another girl pregnant on average of every 3.2 months.
On the other hand I’m a twenty something college student lookalike carrying a networth slightly over $100,000. Hmm, wait a minute, gold diggers with eyes of an eagle, I’ll just pray for modesty after all.

I would love it!!! Wouldn’t it be fabulous, people would no longer focus on “oohh’s he’s rich look at the car he drives” or “oh she’s rich look at how put together she looks”.
Think about how quickly people would get their financial house in order!

I’ve had a similar question — as we get more and more accustomed to biometrics: how long before our atm cards become implants in us? (teensy, tiny chips). And our net worth become all the more closely identified with our very being? Creeeepy.

I have always wondered how it would be to see the finances of the people driving the really expensive cars. Debt just isn’t cool.

Here in Finland our tax return information is basically public. Every year many magazines are published containing tax information of almost every citizen.

My thoughts – referring to friends and family – if you’re the one with the postive networth – the rest would be wanting to ‘borrow’ your money – relationships would go down the toilet. People who have lots of money (ie Oprah) mention those that come out of the woodwork “I’m your second cousin twice removed and can I borrow $$$” Your kids – why work when you know mom and dad can cover you if you need it?? Just thoughts.
