Hey, y’know, people you meet IRL first sometimes turn out to be creeps and ax murderers too. I wonder what the percentages are–has anyone thought to compare? I figure I’ll get to know someone about as well online as in person as long as they aren’t lying about who they are and what they look like (i.e., men posing as women or vice versa), because folks you know in person can hide various aspects of themselves too…

Glad it turned out well. I’m living in Ohio now primarily from meeting people online.

Nice blog! I remember visiting my aol buddy like 9 years ago in Sydney with my best friend. Everybody thought we were nuts! but we had a blast for the whole 2 weeks. I’ve been meeting people online now for about 15 years, including my husband and still keep in touch with most of them. Gotta try the couch site though..

I had a wonderful time with Cap. It was awesome!! He IS fabulous with kids and I truly enjoyed his visit with us. Great food, fun and I had a chance to show Cap a bit of what it’s like to live the suburban life of a soccer mom. haha! :) We found out we had a few more things in common than we first thought (beyond blogging…ahem..Duke Nukem??). Anyway, Cap — thank you for coming over, and for the awesome parting lunch we had today. We hope to see you again sometime not too long from now…. Can’t believe I actually saw you TWICE this year ;) .

Some years back I was interviewing people online for an article about writing for children. One of the writers and I struck up an e-mail friendship that went on for a couple of years. When I told her I’d be visiting family on the East Coast, she invited me to come and visit.
When I got off the train, we shook hands and then hugged. She picked up one of my bags, saying that a friend of hers thought it was VERY dangerous letting “a stranger” stay in their home. The bag almost slipped out of her hands as she talked.
“Oh, careful with that bag, Judith,” I said. “That’s the one with the Stryker saw in it.”
Luckily for me, she has a sense of humor and I *still* had a place to stay.

Hey Cap,

I was trepidatious about CouchSurfing too… but ended up with no other options for a trip to Paris, and so bit the bullet and went for it. As long as you choose a host with lots and lots of recommendations from surfers who’ve stayed with them, you’ll have no problems. I had an _excellent_ time, and it turned out to be much more valuable for the entertainment and friendship than for the money saved.

I guess I’m just hyper-sensitive…or just plain chicken. Maybe I’ve just had bad experiences online?? I’m trying though….I guess that’s half the battle.

I’ve used couchsurfing.com twice and both times were awesome! One was for 3 days before my bike ride across the country and the second was for a night before a 100 mile charity ride. She was awesome and made me breakfast at 6 in the morning!

I remember when meeting people on the internet (to date) was still considered weird and creepy! It caught on faster in the gay community, since it’s harder to meet potential mates and there’s less selection locally, so to speak. I fully admit that I met my first girlfriend online (oh, the horror!), but I didn’t tell my friends at the time. I was too embarrassed! That was eight years ago. Now it’s considered fairly normal, if a little unusual, to meet a mate online. How the times change…

That’s hilarious, you have to admit it didn’t sound quite right. I’ve met some of my online friends before, I belong to a dog forum that has get togethers and meet ups. It’s funny how we can feel so close to people that we’ve never met in person. Have fun in the Bay Area.

I actually invited two internet friends to my wedding! I’d spent half a year planning my wedding with them online, so why not? Have a great time!
