I completely relate to this post and your tips here are great. I also wrote recently about an encounter during a routine car service which reinforced my cynicism when it comes to mechanics and the auto repair industry in general. I had forgotten about the challenges of dealing with mechanics and the auto center sales staff. Being prepared and firm is the best thing you can do to avoid getting ripped off.

dave: yeah thats definitely true. while I was reading the list, the computer industry kept popping up in my mind. People tend to ignore maintaining their computer just like they ignore their vehicles.

did you mean dishonest people would shun that list?

btw your computer repair website is pretty neat. the flash work looks nice.

crappy cars: yeah I generally take care of the basic ones, oil change, brake pad swap, rotating tires etc. – unless I’m lazy. Which er, I usually am. Not good. So I save up on those coupons to quick lube place and go from one place to another. lol.

but you do save a bundle taking care of maintenance yourself. the only time I visit auto shop is for medium to major repairs..

I think these ten rules can be adapted for any repair or consumer industry and should be readily available for all consumers. However, honest people would shun this list. I’m going to use adapt it and use it on my computer repair website. Thanks a ton!

Preventative maintenance doesn’t have to be done by a professional. After all, you are not running to H&R BLOCK to fill out our 1040EZ, or hiring an attorney to handle a parking ticket, why run to a car shop to flush the radiator or change oil?
