yeah I know what you're talking about. I hate that feeling. I dont mind tipping my barber because its only a few bucks overall, and he does a good job (plus I dont visit that much). But say.. if I'm a female paying for a $40-80 hairstylist, I'm not sure how much I'll tip.

tipping is always a highly debated subject, a lot of times I hate tipping at venues (i.e. hotels), especially for things I can do myself.

but on the flip side, as you mentioned.. tipping at restaurants are usually a given, since quite a bit of their income is base on it. I generally tip the "standard" 15%, plus or minus depending on service.

Maybe I am a cheapskate, I hope not, but I hate feeling "obligated" to tip! As an example, my stylist decides ahead what to charge, so if I use her service then I agree to pay that. Why should I feel obligated to pay even more? If she takes a little extra time with me, or does say a coloring that takes quite a while, I will tip extra, but not usually.

I don't mind tipping waitresses, since I know their income is mostly based on it, or even the pizza delivery guy if the pizza doesn't take an hour to arrive. But I do it because I want to.

But to tip just because it is "expected", no.

But then, do they ever give US a discount, say, for being regular customers, no! Why shouldn't we expect THAT????????

If you ever come to Japan, you have to get a hair cut. They shave your forehead, give you a back massage and assorted other strange things that take some getting used to - and no tipping in Japan ;)
