Deep Fryer for Yummy Food
Posted by Cap in Miscellaneous |I need want a deep fryer.
Something below $100. With a lid, because splashy oil scares me. Easy to clean is a plus.
My theory is, I can eat fast food less, and eat unhealthy food on my own terms. As long as I moderate the use of the fryer, everything will be A-Okay, right?
Right.

Please don’t buy a deep fryer. Avoid deep-fried foods alltogether. This is coming from a guy from a country with one of the highest heart disease rates in Europe (Ukraine) – the cuisine is full of deep-fried and grease-fried foods.
Please. Don’t. Buy. A. Deep. Fryer.

Well… you could always make homemade doughnuts using whole wheat flour and oat bran. They’d be a bit heavier, but flavorful. And use canola oil in the fryer. Think maybe the healthy oat bran would cancel out the unhealthy fried bits? Maybe?
Just be safe with the fryer, and don’t let the oil sit around too long and go rancid. Heating creates unhealthy trans-fats even in the healthiest vegetable oil, so start with cold-pressed oil if you can and replace it frequently.
Then you can sell it to the biodiesel people and be super-green, right?

They are Evil, EVIL! You will buy it with thoughts of “I will try and be health conscious and only use it occasionally”, but then, after you have used it a few times, you will see how yummy those deep fried foods can be. How much tastier say homemade batter fried chicken and fish (or my weakness, floured deep fried homemade french fries) is than that healthy baked stuff, then there goes your waistline. I bought one at a yard sale a few years ago and I have to keep it hidden in a cabinet or I use it WAY too much.

If you’ve got a gas range, you’re much better off with a cast-iron frying pan (or a dutch oven if you’re feeling ambitious). They’re cheap, they last forever with minimal maintinance, they’re much, much more versatile.

Amazon Friday Sale to the rescue. $25.99 + free shipping.
I just bought a yogurt maker that was part of the Friday sale. I’ve been eyeing it for awhile, and I love homemade yogurt.

dang it people. I was expecting model suggestions, e.g., I like this and this, not health concerns. heh
see, fried chicken, beer battered fish & chips, way better french fries are some of the many items I’ve been thinking. all could be done on the frying pan or the oven dutch (as I’ve been doing), but much easier and faster with a deep fryer. *drools*
even donuts. donuts! the possibilities and additional reasons for heart disease are endless.
thanks for the link savvy, that is indeed a cheap one, free shipping at that. hmm. I’m thinking something with a basket may be nicer too.. although with all these no-no, and the way my best friend rolled her eyes when I told her I’m going to buy a deep fryer, I’m starting to wonder. I’ll pass on the yogurt maker, though.

GO FOR IT.
If properly fried, correct temperture and time, frying adds only a minimal amount of fat.
For further proof Google Alton Brown and frying.

Ignore all the healthy people… who wants to live forever if it means you can’t eat fried food? Just make sure you use it in moderation, and that you use it to fry up some veggies every once in a while.
You don’t have to believe me, but homemade yogurt is good. Much better than store-bought.

um, yeah, I’m comment spamming you today… but I second Kevin’s suggestion on looking up Alton Brown’s info on frying. If you do it correctly, frying isn’t all that bad for you.

Deep fryers are hell to clean and take up space. Get a pot and a thermometer instead.

I’m with maribeth, think about where you’ll put this greasy monstrosity and how you’ll have to move it everytime you move. Just buy some Popeye’s instead… they make better fried chicken than you’ll ever make. :)

Cast Iron pan with a little pour spout. It’s really much easier to clean than a fancy contraption, and it won’t ever ‘break’ on you and has multiple uses. Honestly, how many of us have broken appliances hidden in the cupboards? Or single-function crap that you use 2x a year?
I got a toaster because I was frustrated heating up bread in the oven and because I like crispy toast. But I like to eat fancy bread that doesn’t fit well in the toaster, and I’ll eat like 4 slices at a time with a stinky cheese. The toaster doesn’t cut it and so it just sits on the counter taking up passive electricity for the dumb red light on the front. I really can’t tell if the purchase was worth it. (I should now go home and unplug the sucker.)
I’d stick the the cast iron pan. It’s so much easier to make funnel cake that way. (PA Dutch treat) You swirl it in circles to match the pan and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Easier than doughnuts if you ask me.

deep frier are not easy to clean, and not hr ealthy way for cooking

You eat fast food because of laziness, most likely. The fryer would collect dust at home while you still eat KFC and Wendy’s. At least, that’s what would happen to me.
