I like to know that the gift I give is going to be USED, and not just stored away somewhere with all the other gifts just given out of obligation, without any thought to them. Last year I gave my then 83 year old MIL a gift to "Reminisce" magazine, she loved looking at all the old-timey pics and reading the stories. It was a gift that kept giving all year long.

I'm not a mom, but I'd love a GC to Burke Williams! Plus it shows you were listening when she said she enjoyed it the first time, so I think it is a good choice.

Consumables are definitely the best gifts. This time I sent some Royal Riviera pears from Harry and David. They are the most freaking awesome pears you will ever taste (Mom agreed)!

I would rather have a gift certificate for something I could use, rather than an "impulse" gift which might just sit up in the closet, the money spent not put to good use.
