Incorrect Change?
Posted by Cap in Miscellaneous |A reader (real one), asked:
What do you do if you are overcharged or undercharged for an item? Or if you get too much change back from a clerk?
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever received an incorrect amount of change before. Not from a human anyway.
Once, I got an extra $20 from the ATM machine during the middle of the night. I couldn’t shove the money back into the machine, and I wasn’t going to return to the location again, so I ended up just keeping it.
If I receive an incorrect amount in person and I found out in time, I’ll just hand back the extra change, or in the case of an overcharge—demand a fix, plus discounts for their mistake.
“Sir, I’m only off by a dime.”
“No excuses, punk.”

I recently exercised my Latte Factor by going to Starbucks and ordered a Grande Drip, a Tall Cappuccino, and some Madeleines. The guy rings it up and says, “that’ll be $3.65″ I handed him my credit card and surprised at the low amount said, “Really? You sure?” at which point he realized that he forgot to ring up the cappuccino. Oh well, Karma, right?

I was undercharged at the bar Friday night and told them because if I didn’t karma would get me. I know it!

Many years ago my mother received $20 too much from the teller at her drive-through bank. She returned to the back and went inside to return the money. She told the teller, “M’am, you’ve given me the wrong amount of cash.” The teller became indignant and called my mom a liar, saying it was impossible she could have made a mistake. Then my mom tossed the extra $20 on the counter and reiterated, “You gave me $20 TOO MUCH.” The teller was very embarrassed and didn’t apologize.

At McDonald’s a while back I ordered just a small item at the drive thru, and they gave me a Big Mac meal instead. I guess I could have taken it back, but I’ve been ripped off so many times at drive thru’s that I just decided to keep it.

lol, it’s kinda sad that when you’re being charged only $3.65 for coffee, you know the amount is too low. A bar will probably another location where you notice drinks cost are too low.
ah drive-throughs.. okay I’ve definitely been short-changed there. in items I’ve ordered, anyway.
and wow, that teller’s an arse, flat out calling a customer liar?

When I worked at a movie theater It was a pain when someone said we did not give correct change. We would have to count their drawer down to see if it evens out or not. But you have to do it. You cant take the customers word for it. I’ll let you in on a secret, they are dumb.

Like the ones that get a large popcorn, exta, extra butter and a diet coke. It evens it out, right?

Where I worked, if the drawer was short, the cashier had to pay the difference out of pocket. So it’s definitely good karma to tell someone that they’ve overpaid you. A worker can really be hurt by having to pay that extra money.
