Water Filter Alternatives
Posted by Cap in Miscellaneous on October 25, 2005 |
Ah I guess it’s time to replace the GE SmartWater MWF filter in my fridge. The water’s starting to taste a bit funky.
You’re suppose to replace these every 6 months, but I can’t recall when was the last time I replaced the water filter for the refrigerator. Woops.
The GE SmartWater filter runs about $35-$45 depending where you’re buying them from. The cheapest I can find is on eBay for $35.60 shipped, which is a pretty decent price. Still, the cost can add up, especially if I replace two every year.
So I’ve been thinking about other alternatives to these water filters. I certainly won’t start buying bottle water, that’s true rip off right there. There are so many options out there though, so it’s a tough call. A lot of people seem to have those water filter system at the kitchen sink, and prices seem to vary greatly on those setups.
If anyone cares to drop a comment on their water source and their opinion on how well they work, I’ll greatly appreciate it!

Water filters are a major issue - esp when filter replacements are the real killer for most systems. I recommend the New Wave Enviro 10 stage water filter - Ive done quite a bit of research on water filters and its the best for the money. Averages about 4cents per gallon and filter lasts 1500 gallons before having to replace. Plus customer service from new wave rocks. If you’re looking for the top dog filter out there, the akai ionizer plus is the deal - from japan. i use this one. i sell both - of course one thinks bias - but to let ya’ll know- i used these systems for years before i even built my site. you can stop by and look/read about both of them here:

happy to answer any questions you have -
and you’re right - buying bottled water aint the deal. i did that for awhile- adds up very fast. and the brita/pur filters are bogus. only filter for a few months and then one forgets to change them which causes the filtered out chlorine and bacteria to once again spill out into your drinking water. avoid them.

strange, I wonder why wordpress decided to put your comment for moderation.
thanks for the post and information! it was very helpful. I’ll definitely check out the Enviro. I always expect those type of units to cost a butt load more, but in the long term I suppose the cost for the filter is less, seeing as how it generally last a year for a family of four.
I already bought a new filter for the fridge though (sorta dying from thirst) so I won’t be buying a new one anytime soon, although I’ll keep researching in the mean time.
the Akai ionizer is a bit out of the budget though. heh.
are there sites where it shows the Envrio filter’s performance data? i.e. the % in reduction for specific parameter, such as chlorine, cyst, asbestos, lead, etc. etc.
I checked the manufacture site and I’m guessing I’ll have to request those info.
The GE MWF filter came with a california department of health service certificate and the data sheet on what it filters.

Still just use Brita here, works fine for my needs. Probably should replace the filter more often too…

Might wanna use the PUR filtering system you can just snap onto your sink. Really simple stuff. Works like a charm too. It might cost around $40 just for the filter system, but the filters are extremely cheap. 6,7 bucks maybe? Just screw it on, and snap on the filter. You can even leave it there if that part of your sink is broken!
