I hope I dont get seriously ill
Posted by Cap in Personal Finance on December 7, 2005 |
… because I don’t have health insurance.
Health insurance = $$$
Lack of health insurance = $$$ x 50
(when you are seriously ill)
Like many college students, I’m without health insurance. Ever since my mom decided that having me on her policy was costing her too much money, she cut me off (ouch).
“Don’t get sick.” She told me.
Nice.
Anyhow, unfortunately the current community college I’m enrolled in doesn’t have any health insurance plan for its student, since the student body isn’t of any significant size. I use to have a minimal coverage health insurance plan at my previous university, but that’s over with, since I’m no longer a student at the university.
So I’m hunting for health insurance plan, specifically ones discounted for full-time students. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ear.
In the meantime, I’m going to keep hoping I don’t get sick.

Oh man, if your body is resilient then maybe insurance that is cheap but cost a lot for copay will work for you. Check out HMO’s like Kaiser and Blue Sheild they should have health insurance for various situations. My experience with Kaiser isn’t that good though, they are like fastfood medical centers to me. good luck

I was in a similar situation when I came out of college. I opted for a policy with a $5,000 deductible…at the time I figured I rarely go sick or needed to go to the hospital so if something bad happened, I’d take the risk and pay $5,000 - my biggest worry was that I would be in some type of terrible accident that would cost tens of thousands of dollars and wanted to be protected in case of something like that. Never had to use the policy and I think the biggest bill I had during that time was $200 for stitches and a shot when I put a screwdriver through my hand.

norman: hmm thanks for the tips. Yeah I’ve heard better things about blue shield of California than say, kaiser permanente. I’ll keep this on my mind when I start researching.
pfadvice: yeah high deductible might be the way to go here, if I cant find some other alternatives. don’t really feel like attaching myself on some other family member’s plan too, even if I contribute to the monthly cost, it may increase their monthly premiums later on.
that’s an ouchy on the screwdriver. yikes!

My brother is a full-time student but unable to be on my parents’ plan because of his age… he has health insurance (high-deductible) from Assurant. I guess they have quite a number of options, so you can do a bit of customization of your coverage.

Get some kind of plan. Even a high deductable plan is better than nothing, and probably fine if you are young and healthy.
I had my appendix out recently. Total cost with Surgeon, CAT Scans, Operating Room, and other Hospital charges: $24,000 U.S. dollars.
Start looking now, get covered Very Soon.

That’s not good (restating the obvious, but I’m serious :/)… check out high-deductible plans at eHealthInsurance.com. You can get one for $100 a month, if you’re young and healthy.

haha u guys are making me nervous… I’ll check out Assurant, thanks.
ouchy with the appendix. yeah I think I’ll go the route of a $4,000 - $5,000 deductible plan.
thanks for the link jonathan.. a quick search shows rates around $45-50 for $4-5K deductible. There’s a PPO Blue Shield plan for $65 per month with no deductible. hmm.
anyway i’ll keep searching.
