I had to buy a new cellphone yesterday (after mine fell to pieces after being dropped) and after all else failed finally had to stab the side of the packaging somewhat manically with a knife to get the phone out! Why can't they make a cellphone that's as tough as the packaging it comes in????

Plastic packaging has been one of those things that especially irks me. One year, I gave all of my relatives a specialty plastic packaging opener that I found on amazon, and they still tell me its the best present I ever gave them.

Over time, I've found the best value solution to be cheap tin-snips from a place that has a bin of cheap tools, like an ACE hardware store. For around 5 bucks, you can get something that will cut with more force than regular kitchen scissors.

I use a device called PLASTIC SURGEON which allows me to open everything I have tried. I think it was around $10.00. They're said to have them at Home Depot.

I keep a pair of these in my kitchen drawer.

http://www.amazon.com/Cut-Anything-Scissor-Penny-Plastic-Packages/dp/B0014630NS

they will even cut through a penny. I have found that they are the only thing that will work on those kinds of packages

carole & jeff: huh two suggestions for can openers. alright i'll give it a whirl next time.

peter: ikea scissors are wonderful because their packaging is easy to open :D

george: yeah good reminder, definitely aware of that. its pretty sad whenever i see printer ink or certain items behind locked glass shelves at retailers just to prevent shoplifting.

no worries all, 'tis just a rant :D

Unfortunately, this type of packaging is needed to prevent shoplifting.

If the package is easily opened, people will take the contents out and pocket them, leaving the empty package, and typically the theft detection device, on the hook or the shelf.

Another case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch.

Kitchen scissors are the best way. Ikea sells them for about $2. and they work great on cutting meat and other foods as well. If you don't have kitchen scissors then get some.

Some packaging is totally ricidulous. To add insult to injury, I once cut my finger on one of these plastic packages. Ow.

Have the store open it before you leave. Just say you have a physical problem that prevents you opening it at home (awd).
