Like Centaur said, the business model of the cell companies depends on selling childish nonsense like wallpapers and ringtones. Also, the cell phones themselves are largely cheap pieces of plastic shit that fall apart after about a year and a half. I’m on my 3rd phone in five years, not because I actually wanted to buy another one, but because the crappy things delaminate or crack. By design, you’re constantly throwing money down a rat hole…the joys of consumer capitalism.

Once upon a time, those of us who traveled by public and needed time to either brace for the day, or wind down from day, needed only to worry about people who ran into friends … acquaintances … total strangers, with whom they needed to have long, loud conversations.

Not any more! Thanks to the wonders of technology, some nitwit sitting in sole splendour on the 6:02 AM can call his/her buddy up and natter loudly and at length about nothing at all! First: I wonder why the person on the receiving end doesn’t hunt them down and kill them, because, dude? It’s 6:02! In the morning! Do we have to know about last night’s movie?
Second: Do we ALL have to know about last night’s movie? One of these days I’m going to snap on the bus. I’m going to stand up, turn and point at the offender, and, resonating throughout the bus, let them have it: “You are LOUD and you are DULL. Kindly keep your voice DOWN!!”

I am totally with you on this one. My last phone I had 3 years, and this current one I’ve had for over 2 years. I will probably have to replace it in a few months (it’s starting to go on me), but I refuse to keep trading up for the “newest and greatest” thing. Who has time for that??

Having just got back from a lengthy trip to the EU and Britain, I can say that we actually have, on the whole, cheaper cell phone service. Plans are more expensive there, the exchange rate makes it even more prohibitive, and worst of all, EU citizens incur insanely high “roaming” charges any time they leave their home countries. I mean on the order of over a dollar a minute. That’s why a large number of Europeans use pay-as-you-go services; a cell phone plan is just too darn expensive. At least when I travel from California to Texas (which, mind you, would be most of the way across Western Europe) I pay exactly what I do in my home state. There was actually a lengthy double article on this in The Economist a month ago, in fact. Interesting stuff.

I had cell phone service from 2001-2003. I went thru 4 phones because the first 3 broke. Then the 4th broke and I gave up, that and I couldn’t pay my bill at the time. At first I really missed it, but then I realized how great it was not being connected to my phone 24/7. Sometimes it’d be good for convenience, but the rest I’m fine w/out.

Question: What’s up with blue tooth? I see teeny boppers running around with it and am like what the heck.

The real money is NOT from selling minutes. Cell companies make more profit from ring tones, wallpapers, and text messaging than from selling standard calling plans. Why is cell service in the U.S. two to four times more expensive the E.U?

I still use the Nokia you have pictured there. It’s rock solid, clear as a bell and you can actually hold it between your ear and shoulder like a phone should fit.

Having been with Verizon for years, I could get a new camera phone from them for free, but then i’d have to get new chargers for my car, home and work, which just isn’t worth it to me.

heh the spoof photo didn’t take that long. I have this cable that plugs the phone to the computer, so I basically just rename the default tone in the program. funny how I never really used the feature until now…

these days, mobile phone seem to be a competition of how many LCD screen it can fit, and how many camera lenses it can have.

my mom has that “new” Motorola RAZR, with a bluetooth headset—and no offense to mommy—some very loud and annoying mp3 ringtone.

drives me nuts.

I’ve only had two phones. I had to get a new one because I was mugged. I got the cheapest one they had. Thats all I need.

I don’t call anyone. No body calls me. I don’t need to take a picture(thats what a digital camera is for), watch movies(thats what my free PSP is for), listen to MP3’s(that is what my nano is for), surf the internet(that is what my laptop is for) and I don’t need it to do the dishes(that is what my Mom is for).

OK, joking on the last one. I do the dishes. No really.

My son just got a new cellphone with a really annoying alarm on it. He left for work early yesterday morning and had his phone plugged in charging it up and I got to wake up to what sounded like aliens blasting death rays in his room when it went off. So at 6 am I got to hunt down his manual to try and find out how to turn it off. Annoying rings I could handle, death rays at 6 am I can’t.

I think I am one of the few people in the world without a cellphone and who will probably never have one. When I leave the house I want to GET AWAY from my phone, not have one with me where I can literally be reached 24/7, and have to pay outrageously for the priviledge on top of that!

There’s actually a reason for custom ring tones – suppose you’re in an important meeting with really important people. Everybody’s coats are hanging on the coatrack. If your phone rings, an obnoxious tone immediately lets everybody know exactly which jerkwad is disrupting everything because he forgot to set his phone to vibrate.
