$200+ Jeans
Posted by Cap on June 22, 2008 |Mmm… Sunday morning rant.
Seriously, what’s up with $200+ jeans? For that matter, anything more than $40 gets me a bit confused (or heck, even $20) — and $200 is only the mid-range price point.
I mean, what makes this jean that’s made in Colombia, better that one that’s also made in Colombia?
Okay okay, I suppose quite a many of them are made in the states (or other “high-end” countries), and I suppose if you can afford it — all good?
One thing’s for sure, if you’re a shareholder of True Religion and the likes, you’re not complaining — and yeah, the rant is also a few years too late.

200 is really high, I agree. But the difference between a 25 dollar pair of jeans from old navy and an 80 dollar pair of jeans from banana republic is significant for me (i know they are the same company). The banana republic ones last 4 times as long, look a lot nicer, and fit better

Agreed. There’s a big difference between $20 jeans and $80 jeans, in terms of fit, look, quality, and how long they will last. Once you get past the $100 mark, there is hardly any difference besides buying the name.

My cheap, or free jeans, last just as long as my one expensive pair, but I don’t wash my clothes every time I wear them either.
I also have never found a pair of good fitting jeans no matter the price.

$200 is ridiculous.
However there is a significant difference in fabric quality between a $5 pair of pants and a $40 pair. Workmanship also is a big factor.
My Express jeans have far outlived my Target jeans.. And I wash jeans every 2-3 wears to extend their life.

I have always thought that $200 jeans (no less the $600 jeans that celebrities supposedly wear) are ridiculous. One day, however, I was in Marshall’s and there was a pair of Juicy Couture jeans (retail $178) for $60, which is about in my price range. I tried them on and they fit really well. I have owned them for about 6 months and they are my superhero jeans. They wear like iron, and they (no kidding) make me look about 10 lbs thinner. I don’t know why they have these magical powers, but they do. I’m a cynic, however, and I truly believe that if I looked long and hard enough, I could find a more reasonably priced superhero pair.

What I do is find nice jeans at a second-hand store like Goodwill. You can’t go there expecting to find something, but I go there often and to 2 or 3 different locations so there is a lot of variety. I guess it is somewhat dependent on luck, and very dependent on how much you are willing to look, but I’d rather spend time searching than just hand over a bunch of cash (which you’d have to spend more time working to earn anyway). Then, I end up with a good pair of jeans and more money in my pocket for other things.

Wow. I’ve finally found a good reason to be fat. Neither True Religion, nor Juicy, nor any of the “couture” jeans are made in my size. I can’t even shop at Old Navy, as their largest jeans won’t fit my queen-sized butt. So I buy online from JMS.com, usually during the end-of-season sales when I can buy one pair and get 50% off a second, which usually comes to about $40.00 for the two. Four pairs of jeans for $80.00, and they last about two years on average.
I’m not sure I understand how a two-hundred dollar pair of pants is warranted on any budget, particularly the budgets of those who read blogs called “stop buying CRAP.” Even couture is assembled in Asia these days for low wages (read “Deluxe: how luxury lost its luster” for the lowdown), so we’re talking major markup even with the dubious consideration of “quality.” For 200 bucks, any pair of pants I buy damn well better have the ability to march itself to the washer, load itself, turn the washer on, and hang itself on the clothesline when the rinse-and-spin cycle is complete. Anymore than 200 bucks, and the pants better be able to iron themselves, hang themselves in the closet, and give me an orgasm on demand (I’m looking at you, Brooke Shields).

I’ve also read “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster” and it has changed my outlook of the “quality” and workmanship of “luxury” goods like $200 jeans. Although I’d love to get my hands on a pair, I realize deep down they’re not worth it.
According to that book, one of the few true luxury brands left is Hermes, and their stuff cost thousands of dollars, because everything is handmade.
If you are curious about the luxury goods market and the massive amt of money it generates, read the book that PDamian (above) talks about. It really opened my eyes to that stuff.

Hey shouty Kathleen,
“i WASH MY JEANS AFTER EACH WEAR, THAT IS TOTALLY GROSS THAT YOU WEAR THEM AFTER THEY ARE DIRTY!”
Why are they dirty after just one wear? You are putting on undies as well, aren’t you? Now THAT’s gross!

@ Kathleen:
““i WASH MY JEANS AFTER EACH WEAR, THAT IS TOTALLY GROSS THAT YOU WEAR THEM AFTER THEY ARE DIRTY!””
I think *you* need to get a grip. What in the WORLD is it that you’re doing in your jeans every day that they get so filthy it makes you near-hysterical to think about wearing them without washing them every time they’re worn?
July 30th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I spend around $40 average on a pair of jeans.
September 27th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
I see no issues with wearing jeans more than once (unwashed) if you only wore it lightly. But then again I see no problem with washing it after every wear too. To each his own I suppose.
March 22nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Kathleen – you are an idiot. What do you sit in MUD every day? Jeans dont get dirty everyday, any more than your winter jacket or your pant suit. Do you dry clean your winter coats after every wear? What an idiot.
December 26th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Kathleen is definitely an idiot. Perhaps she washes her handbags as well after each wear, after all they have been to the underground, coffee shops, parks, waiting rooms…
Not to mention that she does not put any thought in how much water and detergent she wastes. A total idiot.
