Courtesy is the key here, as I believe someone else said. Simply put, just don't be a hindrance to others.

To those who drive slowly in the left lane to "slow down speeders", you are self-righteous pricks. I hate caps lock, but I must use it here. SLOWING DOWN SPEEDERS IS NOT YOUR JOB! That's what the police are for. If you see someone speeding, doesn't it make sense to get out of their way to avoid a wreck and let the cops catch them? Instead, you're serving your own little petty form of "justice" and risking your life and those of other drivers in the process. As someone pointed out, "failure to keep right" is just as illegal as speeding and both will get you a ticket. Would you rather get a ticket for interfering with traffic or let someone else get a ticket for speeding?

From 18 years of ticket-free driving, I have learned that if you simply drive at a reasonably but not excessively fast pace, pass slower people, and let faster people pass you, you'll be far less likely have problems.

I make a product that helps remind motorists to Keep Right Except to pass. Many states have laws against using the left lane except to pass. You can be ticketed even if you are going at or below the speed limit.
See more at: http://movealongs.com.

It seems to me that common courtesy and decency have been tossed out the window when it comes to driving. I have recently moved to Colorado and I am trying to figure out if drivers need to pass a drivers test or if you can simply get your license as a prize in a Cracker Jack box. The things I see on the roads here are simply stunning. For instance seeing a sign that reads "Caution: Icy Bridge" and seeing people get on this bridge (which is part of a turn) and slamming their brakes on. Then the car slides out of control onto the Jersey Barrier. Or someone driving up the mountain passes without snow tires going 10-15mph impeding traffic then getting angry when people are passing them. If you aren't properly equipped you have no business on the road! So after all this rambling what I am getting at is maybe there needs to be a change in the way drivers are educated on proper edict and teach some basic driving skills (such as don't brake hard on ice...). If the parents can't drive properly and they are relied on to teach their kids I see an endless loop of travel in the passing lane as well as accidents that are a direct cause of bad driving habits.

Looks like Stephen & Kurtis are self-appointed vigilante speed-limit enforcers. You two should follow the laws, and let others break them if they wish.... or become cops and ticket them.

Who says people in TX are good about keeping right. Only in certain rural parts of the TX it happens.

Come to Dallas or Houston where if you are jerk in the left lane doing speed limit and causing an irritation to speeders or people trying to pass you can be dead meat and most probably get shot.

People in Dallas drive like idiots. Fort Worth is even worst they think they are riding on the horse and strolling in the park when they are on highway.

I hate Dallas driving. Even with 3 times more traffice in NJ it was far better.

Keith,

That is exactly my thinking. I',ve always had three strikingly similar rules.

1. Drive within my comfort zone.
2. Pass those who are slower.
3. gtf out of the way of those who are faster.

The sign should actually read "everybody keep right" meaning go left only to pass then get back over. If I am being tailgated, I don't get mad, I get over, problem solved. The thing is, you get egotistical lunatics like ^kurtis who can't bear to let someone go faster than them. It's like cryptonite

Kurtis,
The action you are describing is know as reckless driving. You are equally as dangerous as the speediest speeder. Secondly, you are right, in the good ole days people were a lot friendlier to each other. This means that a person with a slow mule would simply step aside to let whoever was in more of a hurry pass. You see, it doesn't affect the slow person to move aside.

You need to lighten up a little bit. If you're a cop, give the guy a ticket. If not, it's ok just let the guy pass. If he is as big a speeder as you believe, then he will pay for it sooner or later, lawfully. There's no need to try to kill him. How about being less selfish and being more morally sound with our brothers? Let your brother by, tip your hat, and get home safely. Everybody love each other, everybody keep right.

OMG!!! You have hit on one of my biggest pet peeves - people who drive in the fast lane when somebody wants to go faster. I have 3 rules that I believe are simply common courtesy.

1) When driving, maintain a constant speed whenever possible - preferably with cruise control. If you notice, I didn't say drive the speed limit. I don't care what speed you drive. If you drive faster than me, please pass me. That way, you may take police attention away from me.

2) Drive in the right most lane that prevents you from breaking Rule #1. This means, if you want to pass somebody, by all means, get in the left hand lane (while maintaining the speed you were driving before passing), pass, and get back in the right hand lane. Do NOT get beside somebody and stay there. This would violate Rule #1 since you had to slow down to match the person's speed on your right.

3) If you fail to honor Rule #1 and #2, do NOT expect me to have the courtesy to follow the rules above either. What this means is if you are in the left hand lane, not passing somebody, and I want to go faster than you, you can expect me to pass you on the right (illegal in a lot of areas), get in front of you and slow down. This also applies if I am in the right lane, you start to pass, and then slow down and stay on my right. I will speed up (breaking Rule #1), get in front of you, return to my constant speed, and not get over to the right (breaking rule #2). Be courteous to me and I will return the favor - golden rule.

Let me educate you idiots who thin just because you are doing the speed limit you have a "right" to be in the left lane. You can get a ticket in all 50 states for "Failure to keep right" no matter what speed you are doing on a multi-lane road. If you are in the left lane doing the speed limit and you are forcing others to pass you on the right then you are breaking the law idiot! It is you, not the person going 5, 10 or 15 MPH faster than the speed limit that is causing a dangerous condition on the roadway. If you have never heard the phrase "Keep right, pass left" or have chosen to ignore this simple rule of the roadway, then you are nothing more than an ignorant and dangerous jackass!!!!!

In Tx people are pretty good about moving over and leaving the left for passing.

I also am a law abiding driver, and I hate tailgaters. I'm always scared they'll hit me on the freeway and it'll be a really bad wreck. I don't drive in the passing lane, or like an older person either.

The USA is the only country I have seen where people do not allow the passing lane to stay clear even when there is no one in the right lane for miles... If the police comes up behind you(w/o lights), you move over so why not other motorists.

csdx: remember the ad campaign against your type of driver: "he was right. DEAD right.?"???I'll bet you twist your prissy mouth up as you wave and as you pat yourself on the back. By breaking the left-lane-for-passing law, you are as much a law-breaker as anybody speeding. It must be wonderful to be such a self-righteous twit. Do you also tell all your contacts (not friends, surely) how law-abiding you THINK you are and how you are saving those terrible speeding, lost souls from themselves??? Sorry, I jsut hate to see left-lane jerks like you. Guess this cold weather in Dixie has frozen my Southern manners. Oh well.....

If he was signaling, then you're the jerk for trying to speed up and pass him, if not then he's the jerk for cutting you off.

Though I admit, I'm one of those who'll be a jerk by actually obeying the speed limits. I'll sometimes wave to the more aggressive tailgaters, just so they know I'm doing it on purpose. OR Driver, it's the kind of people like you that make actually following the rules of the road fun.

If I'm going the speed limit, and you are still getting CLOSER, then YOU are a LAW BREAKER. I may be saving your life or someone else if by getting in the so called 'passing lane' causes speeders to slow down. Some states will agree with you though, they give the Law Breaking Speeder the 'right' to endanger themselves and others with their speeding (those laws just must reflect the number of legislators who support excessive speeding). But there's the law, then there's what's right... SLOW DOWN!!! Getting there a few minute's sooner is not worth the risk!!!

Hey Cap, this is probably the best post I've seen on a blog in the last 259 years.

Mrs. Money, you and Sim hate tailgaters? The only way someone can tailgate you is if you're driving like grandma in the passing lane. Get the hell over!

Those signs you see... yeah the Black and White ones... the ones that say, "Slower Traffic Keep Right", or "Left Lane For Passing Only", yeah those are the ones, are Black and White because they are freaking REGULATORY. No, wait... no need to Google REGULATORY... I'm here to help. REGULATORY means you are required to obey what they say due to traffic regulation (rule, directive, instruction, decree, law, etc.). It's not a matter of choice. It's a matter of law.

I'm sick and tired of you slow butt pukes driving in the #1 lane, impeding the flow of traffic, and then bitching about how you hate to be tailgated. Quit driving like you have nowhere to go and all day to get there.

Ah... that was cathartic... THX Cap!
