I have never stolen but I think like a criminal a lot since I'm very safety-minded and I have cops for uncles. I thik of it as being prepared.

I was a single mom in Philly 27 years ago, barely making ends meet. One day I went to the bank to move $40 from savings to checking so I could pay a bill. (I should note that $40 was MOST of my savings...) The teller and I chatted, and she gave me my slip showing the $40 deposit -- and also $40 in cash. I needed the money soooo badly. But I couldn't keep it. "There's been a mistake," I said.
The teller was horrified, and grateful to me for being honest. I had only cornmeal mush for dinner that night, but I slept quite well.

So once when I was young, pregnant and extremely broke, I was working in an accounting office of a very large retail corporation and found a wallet in one of the file cabinet drawers. I opened the wallet with the full intent of finding out who it belonged to, but there was no id, no credit cards, nothing to identify the owner. It had about a hundred dollars in it. I didn't take it, mostly out of fear that someone would come to collect the wallet and know it was me who took the money. But when I was fired from that job, (believe it or not, they found a way to fire me because I was pregnant, rather than give me benefits and maternity leave) I wished I HAD taken the money. Especially since I needed it so badly.

I used to take a bunch of change from my dad's change dish every morning to buy myself an iced tea on the way to high school. Years later I still felt so guilty about it, I confessed. Turns out he was leaving the change there for me to take, and accused me of thinking he was too stupid to be able to count his missing quarters.

As far as downloads, I think it's just wrong and stupid to download songs for free, especially since 1. it's high risk, who needs that kind of stress? and 2. it's A DOLLAR. Spend the dollar, for pete's sake.

La BellaDonna: At the end you did the right thing, and that's whats important!

H Lee D: Definitely. I was going to write a follow up post about downloading songs, burning DVDs, double features at theaters, piggybacking on wireless.. but yeah, got lazy.

SkyeBlue: Ouch :( I was just about to write that I haven't had money stolen from me before, but I just realized that years ago, someone broke into my house and pretty much looted all the cash in the house. I think the asshole made off with a few hundred bucks I had in a drawer somewhere, and a few thousand dollars my mom kept in her room. He didn't touch my sister's room because it was incredibly messy. heh.

Anyhow, you should just avoid Walmart, or try a different one in your area (if there's any anyway).

Golbguru: Ah sorry if I implied you're still the business of taking small change.

I've never stolen money from anyone before. I HAVE had it stolen from me though, quite a few times.

A few days ago though I didn't pay for an item I knew was still in my cart while my purchases were being rung up at Walmart. And I just walked out with it still in the cart. It was only worth about $2.50. Maybe it was some kind of karmic payback for the DOZENS of times I have caught them overcharging ME.

To add another layer, many people who wouldn't steal money or items from stores have no problem with downloading songs, getting copies of CDs or DVDs, or other things like that...

Actually, I found a wallet full of money that somebody had dropped at a rest stop. I took it home with me, went through the cards, tracked down the phone number of the father of the kid who'd lost it. Dad lived in Massachusetts, I found the wallet in Pennsylvania, and the son was on his way to school in Florida. I sent Dad the wallet, and was suprised and touched to receive flowers from him as a thank-you.

And I was so poor at the time I would rather have had the cost of the postage for mailing the wallet. *sigh*
