Woops, Bought a New Power Supply
Posted by Cap in Woops, Bought Crap |My PC’s power supply decided to flip me off today and say: I’ll see you in hell, Mr.Douche.
That’s what I get for buying an el cheapo $40 power supply. If you read the Newegg.com customer review, you’ll notice a spike in negative review after the one year period as the power supply starts to fail (mine lasted for two years). Quite funny.
Was about to blow $100+ on a new power supply till I caught up on my hardware knowledge and decided on the Enhance ENP-5140GH, an 80-plus certified 400W bad boy for a fairly low price of $60. Woot!

High efficiency is great, but it does not always imply high reliability. I will spare the technical details but keep your computer well ventilated and your power supply should offer you a long service lifetime.

I had the exact same power supply. It replaced a nice Antec that lasted 3 years. The Coolmax lasted a bit less than a year. Luckily CompUsa had a sale on a really nice Antec when the CoolMax started dying. I picked up a second Antec for backup when CompUsa was selling them for $15 after rebate. I checked the NewEgg reviews, sure enough somebody posted with the exact same symptoms mine had, computer would spontaneously turn itself off.

fairly certain the enhance unit I grabbed will last a lot longer, from what I’ve read anyway. manufactures that actually make their own PSUs (especially ones that mass produce them for the OEM market) are generally a better pick than other brands that simply slap their brand on the unit and have a separate manufacture produce the power supplies.
it’s too bad we can’t travel in the future to find these units that has questionable lifespans.
