I have to concur with the group – dual monitors are the way to go. I work for a tech magazine and whenever I do a notebook review, I tend to use both my desktop and laptop in unison, which feels so, so much smoother.

My only gripe with big screen monitors is that I can’t play old videogames on ‘em – they look massively pixelated.

That’s definitely not crap. I have 2 19″ LCD’s, and they were worth every single penny I paid for them. It really improves your productivity, and even if it doesn’t, it’ll impress your friends, that’s for sure!

Yes, dual monitors rock! I have dual monitors at home and people always ask me “Why do you need two?” I can program and watch TV at the same time. Or, if I’m really in a crunch, I can program on one side and have another example program pulled up on the other. Now, if I could only get a third!

I picked up that Dell 24″ widescreen a while back when there was an uber sale. Only $750. Paired with a superduper video card, there’s nothing quite like your favorite game in 1920×1200 goodness. And I won’t even go into how much pr0n fits on there. :-P

And at work, I got stiffed with a crappy little 17″ monitor when I started, so I maneuvered for double 20″ LCDs. Side by side in portrait mode. that’s 2400×1600 effective resolution. I can see lots and lots of my coding errors at the same time now!

Not so fast with the condemnation; dual monitors dramatically increase productivity. Somewhere on the Apple website they have a study suggesting 30-40% improvements in Word, Excel, and other desktop software. I use dual monitors at my work and could never go back — on a number of tasks, I’m more than twice as fast.

yeah.. I finally have two monitors to use extended desktop. just one is enough for me though… I find that it can be tiring to have to move my eyes around so much, heh.

I do use it for the movie watching + paper writing action though. sweet…

My laptop has a 1440 x 900 resolution screen — and it’s great! Of course, it’s not nearly enough, so I’ve got my old 1024 x 768 LCD set up for an extended desktop.

In my opinion, a good monitor is the most important component of a computer. Followed by a good keyboard and a good mouse.

A few years back my company gave each employee a $1100 allowance to buy a home computer from Dell. I picked up their cheapest computer, but got it with a 20″ LCD.

A year ago, that computer was ready for the dustbin, so I bought another Dell (one of the super-rebate specials) for $1000 including a 24″ widescreen LCD. Now I can view my spreadsheets at 1920×1200 on the 24″, and have my web pages up on the 20″ screen. That’s over 3.5 million pixels of financial planning goodness!
